Today I finished my last English book "Space Wolf: The Second Omnibus", a mammoth 768 page 3-in-1 collection of books. I read the first omnibus over Christmas. It's full aliens, demon worshipers, mutants and wolf-like warriors shooting and cutting their way to glory in the name of the Allfather. Now I'm switching to a Japanese manga, and, well, the story is a little different ^^

Now I need to start reading Japanese, even if it's slow and painful at first, the only way to improve is to practice. So I've started with よつばと!, a story of a young girl moving home and the fun/trouble she gets up to. A very different change from what I was reading in English, but it's quite a simple story using every-day vocabulary, so it's perfect for studying.

Words of the Day

  • いっぱい "full"
  • ひっこし "moving (dwelling, office, etc.); changing residence"
  • すごい "amazing; great; wonderful; terrific;"
  • すげえ〜 "amazing; great; wonderful; terrific; (male/casual)"
  • 人 (ひと) "person"
  • 学校 (がっこう) "school"

よつばと! is worth every second you spend with it =D
It is such a cute and funny manga and you can improve your japanese reading and vocabulary ^^
Oh, why didn't you look up the japanese word for sunflower?
    日回り (ひまわり) - sunflower

Everytime I heard the word ひまわり I can't but recall the start of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofd-SzGweTo

By the way Chris, how are you finding that book so far (If you've started reading it yet)? I was looking for some Japanese children's books when I was in Japan but even some of those seems a little too hard and strangely expensive. Have heard of よつばと! but not idea as to what age range its aimed at. Might order it and see if I can make any sense of it ^^

よつばと! is no novel or something but a manga. So there isn't really a recommended age range because Kanji have furigana added. And it is a cute lil' story everyone can enjoy =)
I was looking for children books too but couldn't really decide because I had absolutely no idea back than.

Some of the manga I have is for age 12+ so I was wondering if this book had such a rating. I would like to find manga that's aimed at young children and is written in a simplistic manner. Have you read the book Ryudo, are you sure it has furigana?

I don't see any age rating on the books themself but as I own volume 6, 7 and 8 in japanese I can sure tell you that it has furigana.
And it is written in a simplistic manner since the main protagonist is a five year old girl which moves into a new neighbourhood with her dad and the stuff she experiences with her dad and his best friend, the family next door and stuff.

Hayate no Gotoku manga is targetted at a younger demographic so I believe it contains furigana. either was it is a good read.

Didn't know you were an avid warhammer fan.
I've been trying to read some Japanese only next aswell, it's proving much more difficult than I expected probably because I'm starting myself in the deepend. Spice and Wolf novel, Saki manga (filled with confusing mahjong jargon).

I used to collect and paint the figures, but never played the game. That's long ago tho. Now I really enjoy the stories, especially this Space Wolf story. I know there is a games workshop here in Japan, so maybe I could find Japanese language books, but they are way out of my league right now.

So it's just cute stories about daily life for now ^^

I am doing the same to improve my japanese but it take so long to finish one manga haha..
I an actually reading OnePiece 6 ( finished the 1-5) and evene if kanji get furigana, I have to say that I have to check at least on time/page in my jisho.. but it is good practice, so ...

one day we will be able to read " 源氏物語" (genji monogatari) ^^
