Japanese Study: Day 5
Today there was only one word of the day and that was だめ "useless; no good; hopeless;". I was really tired yesterday, made a few mistakes, and generally the day just sucked.
Luckily crap days are not a regular occurrence, so I sacrificed a bit of study time to get to bed as soon as I could and now I'm up the next day writing this and ready to go.
The other frustration of the day was when I tried to create a new goal on smart.fm. Why hide such an important feature?! Turns out it's only on the explore page.
One thing I'm adding to my study sessions, thanks to the suggestion of Danny, is to harvest emails I get at work for common words/phrases that I can add to my vocab set and use daily. Before that I'd just been using Google translator on the emails, since I can't sit and translate them properly at work because there's work to be done. I'd like to talk to clients more but I'm not at that level yet. I'll get there, but it will just take time and lots of study.

"Dame" to me, has always been something you say to stop someone. "Itadaite mo ii?" "Dame." "Kisu shite?" "Dame." "Ecchi shiyou?" "DAAAAAMEEEEE!" and so on. So when I had to translate in hentai, which is what they say before they uh, explode, I had trouble picking the right English expression. So, thanks for this post. Next time I'll write, "It's no good." or "It's useless."

I first learned だめ from hearing a mother repeatedly saying it to a kid. So I guessed it's meaning way before I looked it up. Not quite the same as your experience tho ^^

So on Tuesday I was able to study for about an hour and a half to two hours. I'm studying some hard grammar that I don't really understand but I am confident that if I keep going (and regularly review!) that it will all come together... it's worked for me so far and if it doesn't this time, well I can worry about that when it becomes a problem!
I haven't used Anki in about a year now, but I think I'm ready to get back into it, so I've started a new deck. Smart.fm was really working for me for a while, but when I get bored of things I like to move on. I know it works (like anki) so I have no doubt I'll probably move back to it one day, but for now I'm giving Anki another go. So far I've been keeping up with reviews, but it's been easy because my deck is tiny!
